Psalms 91:1-16NIV

1 Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” 3 Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. 4 He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. 5 You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, 6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. 7 A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. 8 You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked. 9 If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,” and you make the Most High your dwelling, 10 no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. 11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; 12 they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. 13 You will tread on the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent. 14 “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. 15 He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. 16 With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”

The truth of Psalm 91:

“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’ ” Psalm 91:1-2
“Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.” Psalm 91:14-16
-The context of this psalm is set within (verse 1) a relationship of connection, and a relationship of trust (verse 2) .
-It’s as if the psalmist is saying “No matter what is happening around me, I trust you, and I trust in your protection of me”
-The powerful truth of Psalm 91 is this: God offers protection…for those who love Him, for those who trust Him, for those who dwell and abide so near to Him that they are resting in His shadow.

Thousands of years ago, a collection of lyrical poems were written.
This collection was originally titled, Tehillim, in Hebrew, which means “praise songs”.
Today we know them in our Bible as the Book of Psalms.
Throughout this series, we are going to study three specific Psalms in order to understand how they can impact us today.

Psalms 51:1-19NIV

1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight; so you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge. 5 Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. 6 Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb; you taught me wisdom in that secret place. 7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. 8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. 9 Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. 10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. 13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, so that sinners will turn back to you. 14 Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, you who are God my Savior, and my tongue will sing of your righteousness. 15 Open my lips, Lord, and my mouth will declare your praise. 16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. 17 My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise. 18 May it please you to prosper Zion, to build up the walls of Jerusalem. 19 Then you will delight in the sacrifices of the righteous, in burnt offerings offered whole; then bulls will be offered on your altar.

“What do I do with my sin?”
That’s the question David was faced with in response to the terrible sins he committed. And the question is the same for us today.

Psalm 51 is a psalm of repentance.
What is repentance? The term throughout Scripture is often translated “to turn” or “to return”. Repentance is admitting you have strayed and, in response, returning to God.

David begins with confession.
“For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight; so you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge. Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me”. Psalm 51:3-5

After confessing, next comes choosing the path of repentance.
Consider the words/phrases David uses throughout Psalm 51:

Part 1: God offers value for worthlessness, re-construction for de-construction, life for death….Beauty for Ashes.
Part 2: God offers recovery from the most traumatic moments, even moments of mourning and grief. He anoints us out of those periods into joy and even celebration as only He can.
Part 3: God offers a way out of longer-term sadness, anxiety, worry or depression. Praise transforms us, even in despair.
Today: What are the ramifications of the power of God at work in our lives through these trades? Oaks of Righteousness

“They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream.”
tree = courage, fruitfulness, absence of worry
Psalm 1:3
“That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.”
tree = fruitfulness, life, prosperity in God
