Church of the Nazarene – East Rock

What We Believe

What we believe: Jesus Christ

Over the next few weeks as a church we are going to explore what we believe. These key doctrines and concepts of scripture shape our life individually as well as our life together as the Church. Together we want to get a clearer picture of the nature of our faith as the Church of the Nazarene, not just to gain knowledge, but to value the freedom and joy found in living out the way of Jesus of Nazareth.

Welcome to our new teaching series “What we believe”.

Today is the beginning and the end.

Because who we are and what we believe begins and ends with Jesus.

He is the foundation.

It starts and ends with Him.

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭1‬:‭20‬-‭23

‬‬But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said,

“Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).

In Matthew’s account, he focuses very little on the actual details of the birth of Jesus. But he gives immediate focus to the significance of who Jesus is.-The mission of Jesus is to be Savior, save us from sin.”you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins”-The ministry of Jesus is to be God here with us.”they will call him Immanuel”(which means “God with us”)

‭‭John‬ ‭14‬:‭1‬-‭7‬‬

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God ; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

Listen to the claims of Christ Himself:-I am the way between you and the Father.-You don’t have to be separated anymore.-Sin no longer needs to be a barrier.-I haven’t just come to show you the Father, I’ve come to reconcile you with the Father.

Bottom Line:

It all begins and ends with Jesus.
