We are joined on today’s broadcast of HOPE Talks by by the Director and founder of Village to Village, Heidi Dove. Heidi joins us today to talk about the ministry that Village to Village does in our community and abroad.

Village to Village began because of several trips to Guatemala. After realizing that we could adopt villages and provide sustainable resources, we felt like it would be the perfect opportunity to build relationships long term and help communities become self sufficient.

On one of our first trips to Guatemala, Heidi's mentor challenged her to pray about beginning her own nonprofit. After months of prayer and talking with possible board members, we began Village to Village in May of 2016.

Other than Guatemala, all of our countries have local connections. People that serve on our board or with us in ministry have connected us to the places where we serve. A few years into ministry, we realized that we needed something local and that is where working with the local refugee community began. We are joined on today’s Christmas day broadcast by Tawnya Landes. Tawnya joins us today to share about her passion for packing shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child. She first learned about Operation Christmas child last year when a child who received a shoebox from somebody, she knows wrote her back and talked about how the shoebox had impacted their life. Last year Tawnya was able to do 50 shoeboxes and this year she was able to do close to 200 shoeboxes. Most of the items in the shoeboxes Tawnya has made by hand. An example of some of the items that she has made for the shoeboxes are dolls and art kits. She also had a friend that was able to make some wooden trucks for the shoeboxes. Evangeline was born in Cebu, Philippines where her family lived near a dump area. She had to skip school and babysit her younger siblings while her mom worked seven days a week, providing food for the family. Evangeline received a shoebox gift when she was 13 years old. There was only one left, and they offered it to her. It’s contents met many needs for Evangeline and her family, toothbrush and toothpaste especially stood out to her, as those were items they couldn’t afford. She also remembers receiving coloring books and small toys. to hear more how a shoebox gift assured that God loved her and her siblings we invite you to listen to her testimony. Dr. Phil was originally born in Alabama. When he was three years old his parents moved to Florida. When Dr. Phil was about six years old his parents accepted a call to missions and they moved to Italy. They live in Florence Italy for two years and then moved to Rome Italy. They lived there till Dr. Phil was 16 then they moved to Canada where Dr. Phil graduated high school. Dr. Phil attended Olivet Nazarene University and then Nazarene theological seminary. Dr. Phil pastored in Ohio and Virginia before becoming the district superintendent of Virginia in 2004. We pray that today’s broadcast will be a half hour of hope for your life.

Mark helps lead celebrate recovery at Cornerstone church in Harrisonburg on Thursday nights. Mark was born in Indiana. Mark‘s dad was a pastor and when Mark was three years old his family answered a call to Mennonite voluntary service so their family moved to the Watts area of Los Angeles. About three years after moving to Los Angeles his family then move to Amarillo, Texas to help with a church plant. After 10 years in Texas Mark’s family move to Richmond, Virginia. After Mark graduated from high school he attended Eastern Mennonite University. After college Mark moved back to Richmond before eventually coming back to the valley.

She did go back to live with her mom and stepdad for a little bit and then went to live with her dad in Florida for her junior and senior year of high school before moving back to Virginia. Growing up in a family of 9 kids, Vladimir Prokhnevskiy didn’t get many gifts and food was a luxury.

One harsh winter in Kiev, Ukraine, Prokhnevskiy and his siblings rode a bus and then a tram to get to the church where shoeboxes were handed out. The brightly colored gifts stood out immediately! He was so excited about his gift that time seemed to stand still for a brief moment.

Prokhnevskiy’s favorite items were candy and toys, but he remembers “brushing” his teeth with floss to enjoy the minty flavored string and now having a toothbrush of his own! The shoebox represented to Prokhnevskiy unconditional love that heals everything, allowing him and his siblings to forget their struggles for a moment and just feel loved.

We will be praying together specifically for five key areas.

FOCUS 1, Pray for one another (I Timothy 2:1): Who is hurting around you? Who is in need of hope and redemption? Who has a physical need? A financial need? A spiritual need? What we’re fighting: Sickness, discouragement, hopelessness.

FOCUS 2, Pray for peace (Philippians 4:7): We are living in an unprecedented time of uncertainty. Many are attacked and some paralyzed by fear and anxiety. Peace does not come from our circumstances, but from our God who is our peace. Where is an area you are needing to experience peace? Where are you currently seeking peace from other sources than In Christ? Where is disruption and the Lord is inviting you to speak prayers of peace? Peace is a fruit of the Spirit. How can you embody His peace during these days? What we’re fighting: Anxiety, worry, timidity.

FOCUS 3, Pray for courage (Joshua 1:9): Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather obedience in spite of fear. The source of our strength and courage is not found in ourselves, but in Christ. Where is God asking you to trust and walk in obedience in spite of your fear? Where is it that you are walking in obedience but not yet seeing God’s answer, His provision, or His next step? What we’re fighting: self-focus, disobedience, doubt.

FOCUS 4, Pray for unity (1 Corinthians 1:10): We don’t seek unity for the sake of unity but unity in Christ (as we make Christ the focus, he can bring unity). Is there anywhere you see disunity in your life? In your family? In your community? What is it today that you are seeking instead of God? In place of God? What we’re fighting: discord, pettiness, negative talk.

FOCUS 5, Pray for our church (Acts 1:8): Pray for us to be faithful in living out of mission: Transformed by God to bring hope to others through Christ. Pray for us to be obedient even in times of uncertainty. Pray for unity in the body as we seek the Lord and trust in Him to lead us. Pray for our leadership and volunteers. What we’re fighting: weakness, irrelevance, ineffectiveness.

Amanda was born in Puerto Rico. When she was three her family to Illinois near her grandparents. Amanda grew up as a pastors kids and her family also lived in Colorado and Washington State. Before Amanda started her freshman year of high school her family moved to the Shenandoah Valley when her dad joined the pastoral staff at Harrisonburg First Church of the Nazarene. She has lived in the valley ever since. Amanda currently serves as the director of worship ministries for the Spanish congregation at Harrisonburg First Church of the Nazarene and joins us on Front Porch Talks today to share her testimony.

He and his family came to the Shenandoah Valley in 1994 where he was the pastor of Harrisonburg First Church of the Nazarene for 24 years. In 2018 he answered the call to become the District Superintendent for the Philadelphia District Church of the Nazarene.
